The ‘Instrumentum Laboris’
of the Synod of Bishops on
young people scheduled
for later this year, was released
at a press conference in
the Vatican in 2016-17.
An important input has
been from an online
questionnaire to which
over 100,000 youth responded.
Other inputs came from the
International Seminar on the
Condition of Youth held in
Rome in September 2017,
and the March 2018 Pre-Synodal
Meeting in Rome with 300
youth in which another
15,000 participated online.
Recognizing, interpreting, choosing
The first part of the “Instrumentum
Laboris” – recognizing - is
dedicated to a Church that
listens and is open to the
realities and numerous
challenges that young
people are faced with in
today’s context. Many of
these challenges, such as
religious discrimination,
racism, job insecurity, poverty
, drug addiction, alcoholism,
bullying, sexual exploitation,
child pornography and
corruption.., are generated by
the “culture of waste” and by
an improper use of new digital
technologies that are so pervasive.
The second part – interpreting –
deals with the theme of
discernment of one’s vocation
in the light of theological and
biblical tradition.

Pope Francis:
Pope Francis is the head of the
Catholic Church and sovereign
of the Vatican City State.
Francis is the first Jesuit pope,
the first from the Americas, the
first from the Southern Hemisphere.
At his first audience on 16 March
2013, Francis told journalists that
he had chosen the name in honor
of Saint Francis of Assisi, and had
done so because he was especially
concerned for the well-being of
the poor.
Pope Francis said that the most
powerful message of Jesus Christ
is mercy.
Practical teachings:
Francis told La Civilta Cattolica
that the church does not need
to speak constantly of the issues
of abortion, artificial contraception,
and homosexuality. He thought
that other issues, notably the
duty to help those who
are poor and marginalized,
have been neglected. He
added that the church had
focused in trivial issues, and
as such should not be so
prone to condemn, and that
priests should be more welcoming.
He said the confessional should be used
to motivate people to better themselves.
While he has said that the greatest
poverty is "the lack of Christ," and
the "only one real kind of poverty"
is "not living as children of God and
brothers and sisters in Christ", Francis
has also been very outspoken against
material poverty.
Pope Francis has courageously
confronted many difficult issues
in his life, such as the abuses,
corruption and disappeared
students in Argentina, sexual
scandals in the church etc.
He also has a great admiration
for the family as a manifestation
of God in its fullness.
So in summary, Pope Francis
has all the hallmarks of a
revolutionary, he has seen
the light of God!
