Meister Eckhart:
Eckhart was probably born in the village
of Tambach, near Gotha, in the
Landgraviate of Thuringia, perhaps
between 1250 and 1260.
Eckhart was schooled in medieval
scholasticism and was well-acquainted
with Aristotelianism, Augustinianism,
and Neo-Platonism. He studied at
Cologne. He may have also studied
at the University of Paris.
On 1311 Eckhart was appointed by
the general chapter held at Naples
as teacher at Paris. To be invited back
to Paris for a second stint as magister
was a rare privilege, previously
granted only to Thomas Aquinas.
It appears that some of the Dominican
authorities already had concerns about
Eckhart's teaching. Basically the clergy
did not like a direct teaching common
people could understand...
Sermons
Although he was an accomplished
academic theologian, Eckhart's
best-remembered works are his highly
unusual sermons in the vernacular.
Eckhart as a preaching friar attempted
to guide his flock, as well as monks
and nuns under his jurisdiction, with
practical sermons on spiritual
transformation and New Testament
metaphorical content related
to the power inherent in disinterest
(dispassion or detachment).
The central theme of Eckhart's
German sermons is the presence
of God in the individual soul, and
the dignity of the soul of the just
man. Although he elaborated on
this theme, he rarely departed from
it.
In one sermon, Eckhart gives the
following summary of his message:
"When I preach, I usually speak
of detachment and say that a man
should be empty of self and all things;
and secondly, that he should be
reconstructed in the simple
good that God is; and thirdly, that
he should consider the great aristocracy
which God has set up in the soul,
such that by means of it man may
wonderfully attain to God;
and fourthly, of the purity of the
divine nature."
Authors comments:
Eckhart's German sermons were
fiery, a sign of true spirituality and
desire to help.We note he used the
vernacular - German - not Latin etc.
His emphasis on detachment is a
clear mark of his achievements- since
most top-level masters mention this as
the culmination of spiritual development
- Sri Ramana Maharashi, St. John of
The Cross etc. The fact that most
members of congregations are stuck
on the word and not the meaning
has always been the case. To really
understand scriptures you must have
some deep experiences as a basis,
else the filter of the intellect will distort
all you read...
As usually happens with such an
independent Master, he was considered
heretic by some in the church,
but 'dropped' his body before
such notice arrived!

Extract from the last source of his writings:
The second means of attraction which
He used is Emptiness, as we see
when we place one end of a hollow
pipe in water, and draw up it by
suction; the water runs up the stem
to the mouth, because the emptiness
of the pipe, from which the air has
been drawn, draws the water to itself.
So Our Lord Jesus Christ made
Himself empty that He might wisely
draw
all things to Himself. Therefore He
let all the blood that was in His
Body flow out, and so attracted to
Himself all the compassion and
grace that was in His Father's
heart, so completely and profitably
as to suffice for the whole world.
