Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh - Hindu Philosopher and Yogi - India
“You exist in time, but you belong to eternity.”
Rajneesh (Chandra Mohan Jain,
1931 – 1990), also known
as known as Osho , was an
Indian spiritual guru,
philosopher and the
leader of the Rajneesh
movement.
He completed his B.A. in
philosophy at D.N. Jain
College in 1955.
In the University of Sagar
he earned his M.A. in philosophy
(with distinction) in 1957.
At the age of 21 he had an
intense spiritual awakening,
which inspired in him the
belief that individual
religious experience is
the central fact of spiritual
life and that such
experiences cannot be
organized into any
single belief system.
During his lifetime he was
viewed as a controversial
new religious movement leader
and mystic. In the 1960s he
traveled throughout India as
a public speaker and was a
vocal critic of socialism,
arguing that India was not
ready for socialism and that
socialism, communism and
anarchism could evolve only
when capitalism had reached
its maturity.
Rajneesh also criticized
Mahatma Gandhi, and orthodoxy
of mainstream religions.
Rajneesh emphasized the
importance of meditation,
mindfulness, love, celebration,
courage, creativity and
humour—qualities that he
viewed as being suppressed
by adherence to static
belief systems, religious
tradition and socialisation.
In advocating a more open
attitude to human sexuality
he caused controversy in India.
In 1970, Rajneesh spent
time in Mumbai initiating
followers known as "neo-sannyasins".
During this period he expanded his
spiritual teachings and
commented extensively in
discourses on the writings
of religious traditions, mystics,
and philosophers from around
the world.
In 1981, the Rajneesh
movement's efforts refocused
on activities in the United
States but was expelled and
returned to India.
In 1989 Rajneesh adopted
the Buddhist name Osho.
After his death his disciples,
convinced that he had been
the victim of government intrigue,
(some belief we has poisoned
while in US jails) voiced
their belief in his
innocence and vowed to
continue the movement
he started. In the early
21st century it had some 750
centres located in more than
60 countries.
