Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar:
“Love is not an emotion. It is your very existence.”
Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
is a humanitarian leader,
spiritual teacher and
ambassador of peace.
He seems to have head-start
with TM and Maharishi Mahesh,
but he had a calling to
help the poor and common
people - and he did. He was
very brave to abandon a
large scale movement and
start from scratch!
His vision of a stress-free,
violence-free society has
united millions of people
the world over through
service projects and
the courses of The Art of
Living.
Born in 1956 in Southern
India, Gurudev was a gifted
child. By the age of four,
he was able to recite the
Bhagavad Gita and was often
found in meditation.
His first teacher was
Sudhakar Chaturvedi, a
scholar, who had a long-standing
association with Mahatma
Gandhi.
Gurudev holds degrees in
Vedic literature and physics.
After graduation, Shankar
travelled with his second
teacher, Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi, giving talks and
arranging conferences on
Vedic science, and setting
up Transcendental Meditation
and Ayurveda centres.
Shankar seems to have seen
the great power of an
international presense
with Maharishi and his TM,
but next we see a big
change in his outlook:
Quoting Shankar:
“It (relationship with Maharishi)
was very good, nice, loving
and cordial... but suddenly,
I took leave from all that
and changed to village-level
persons. I travelled to
small and remote villages.
My heart was more with them.
The sewa (service) aspect
was not part of that
(the TM) movement. That
movement was more intellectual,
based on meditation.
I was more interested in sewa.”

As a spiritual teacher,
Gurudev has rekindled the
traditions of yoga and
meditation and offered
them in a form that is
relevant to the 21st century.
Apart from reviving ancient
wisdom, Gurudev has created
new techniques for personal
and social transformation.
These include the Sudarshan
Kriya® which has helped
millions of people find
relief from stress and
discover inner reservoirs
of energy and peace in
daily life.
In a mere 34 years, his
programs and initiatives
have touched the lives of
over 370 million people in
154 countries.
A Figure of Peace
As an ambassador of peace,
Gurudev plays a key role in
conflict resolution and
spreads his vision of
non-violence at public
forums and gatherings
world-wide. Regarded as
a neutral figure with
a sole agenda of peace.
