Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was
an Indian activist who was the leader
of the Indian independence movement
against British colonial rule.

Employing nonviolent civil disobedience,
Gandhi led India to independence
and inspired movements for civil rights
and freedom across the world.

Authors Note: Since Gandhi's political
stance was a living application of
ahimsa or non-violence, his is also a
spiritual master in the application of
his understanding to the perceived
needs of his times. He was educated
as a Lawyer - but he clearly transcended
it as his conscience became his
guiding light. His prayers, humility
and poverty were all signs of a spiritual
devotee of God. Therefore we include
him as also a spiritual master here.
