Rumi - (Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī)
- Persian Poet, Mystic and Sufi
An example first: I read that Rumi did
a form of Sufi prayer in which one
holds ones breath as long as possible.
They report that Rumi did this so
intensely - that eventually blood came
all over his skin with the sweat!
BBC reports 2014: Rumi - the best

Notes by author - Raul:
As a very advanced Spiritual Master
with many skills and accomplishments,
Rumi is hard to understand or classify
fully. Most like myself believed he
was just a great Sufi Poet.
But as I did this research on him
- found a lot more. Thus, i will
give a summary below.
My focus as always is to provide
a glimpse of the human facts that
led the spiritual evolution and growth
of this person in particular. Al great
beings like Gandhi etc. have some
events that were pivotal to the
direction they took in life, let’s
look at Rumi:
Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī or
just Rumi (1207-1273) was born in
what is today Afghanistan,
and the typical labels Wikipedia
and others give to him are:
'13th-century Persian poet, jurist,
Islamic scholar, theologian, and
Sufi mystic'.
Greater Balkh, were Rumi grew up,
was at that time a major center of
Persian culture and Sufism
had developed there for several
centuries. The most important
influences upon Rumi,
besides his father, were the Persian
poets Attar and Sanai. Rumi
expresses his appreciation:
"Attar was the spirit, Sanai his eyes
twain, and in time thereafter, Came
we in their train"and mentions in
another poem:
"Attar has traversed the seven cities
of Love, we are still at the turn of one
street".
His father was also connected to the
spiritual lineage of Najm al-Din Kubra.
Upon his death, his followers and his
son Sultan Walad founded the Mevlevi
Order, also known as the Order of the
Whirling Dervishes.
Rumi's father was Bahā ud-Dīn Walad,
a theologian, jurist and a mystic from
Balkh, who was also known by the
followers of Rumi as Sultan al-Ulama
or "Sultan of the Scholars".
(we skip details of the family’s travels
due to wars and invaders...)
Rumi encountered one of the most
famous mystic Persian poets, Attar,
in the Iranian city
of Nishapur, located in the province
of Khorāsān. Attar immediately
recognized Rumi's
spiritual eminence. He saw the father
walking ahead of the son and said:
"Here comes a sea followed by an
ocean."
Attar gave the boy his Asrārnāma,
a book about the entanglement of
the soul in the material world. This
meeting had a deep impact on the
eighteen-year-old Rumi and later
on became the inspiration for his
works.
...
For nine years, Rumi practiced
Sufism as a disciple of Burhan
ud-Din until the latter
died in 1240 or 1241. Rumi's public
life then began: he became an
Islamic Jurist, issuing fatwas and
giving sermons in the mosques of
Konya. He also served as a Molvi
(Islamic teacher) and taught his
adherents in the madrassa.
(Now the big change came)
It was his meeting with the dervish
Shams-e Tabrizi on 1244 that
completely changed his life. From
an accomplished teacher and jurist,
Rumi was transformed into an ascetic.
A partial poem from the url below:
Be Lost in the Call
-------------------
Lord, said David, since you do not need
us, why did you create these two worlds?
Reality replied: O prisoner of time,
I was a secret treasure of kindness
and generosity, and I wished this
treasure to be known, so I created
a mirror: its shining face, the heart;
its darkened back, the world;
The back would please you if you've
never seen the face.

Notes by author Raul:
There are very strong parallels with
St John of the Cross and other
advanced Bhaktas...for this is the
path of Love. His accomplishments
do agree with Buddhas Nirvana, or
total cessation of an individual
existence or a separate mind...

Jelaluddin Rumi, the 13th century mystic poet, was truly
one of the most passionate and profound poets in history.
Now, today his presence still remains strong, due in part
to how his words seem to drip of the divine, and startle
a profound rememberance that links all back to the Soul-Essence...:
