Why the GIANT Buddhas and Maha-Nirvana?
Notes by the author - Raul:
The Buddha was a saint (Arhat) that
was determined NOT to be reborn
as a Humanagain (he had recalled
billions of former lives after his
2-year fasting...). When he 'dropped'
the body - after passing thru all
stages of mediation and concentration -
he finally dissolved his consciousness
into Maha Nirvana.
This is way beyond sensory and mental
stages - but some call it the 'Glory of
God' or simply the Infinite. In this stage
the mind resolves into a glorious
experience of infinite rays and there
is no way to return to a
'small body-mind' after this.
It is an immeasurable space bigger
than the physical or astronomic universe -
beyond space and time, body and
mind. It is also way beyond
experiences of infinite love or
happiness. Thus the GIANT Buddha.
Note: In Buddhism the Buddha is the
final aim and example, both an
historical being and a final state of
liberation, the Dhamma is Truth and
the teachings and Sangha are the
monks or spiritual aspirants as
a group together.
The Leshan Giant Buddha:
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-metre
tall stone statue, built between 713
and 803, depicting Maitreya. It is carved
out of a cliff face of Cretaceous red bed
sandstones that lies at the confluence
of the Min River and Dadu River in the
southern part of Sichuan province
in China, near the city of Leshan.
Where Leshan Giant Buddha was built
is a joint point of three rivers.
Many boats and ships crashed there
due to the turbulent flow. So a Buddhist
monk named Haitong decided to
build the giant to reduce the turbulence
and serve as a striking sign to help the
passing boats and ships avoid crashing.
Its construction started in 713 and
took 91 years to finish. Thus there
are better views from the river.
According to Buddhist tradition, Maitreya
is a Bodhisattva (Buddha of Compassion)
who will appear on Earth in the future,
achieve complete enlightenment,
and teach the pure dharma. According to
scriptures, Maitreya will be a successor
to the present ()age) Buddha, Gautama
Buddha (also known as Śākyamuni Buddha).
