Meeting of Indigenous Youth in Soloy,
Panama, Jan. 18, the pope urged the
young people to “be grateful for the
history of their people,” which will
help them “go forward full of hope.”

“Return to your culture of origins,
” he said. “Take charge of your roots,
because from your roots comes the
strength to make things grow, flourish
and bear fruit.”

According to a press release, over
2,000 indigenous young people
were expected to attend the Jan.
17-21 meeting to prepare for World
Youth Day in Panama.

Panama's constitution states that
Roman Catholicism is the majority
religion and should be taught in
public schools; parents do, however,
have the right to exempt their
children from religious instruction.

An official survey carried out by the
government estimated in 2015 that
63% of the population, or 2.5M people,
identifies itself as Roman Catholic,
and 25% percent as evangelical
Protestant. Other faiths are The
Jehovah's Witnesses, Adventist Church,
The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, Buddhism,
Judaism, Bahá'í Faith and Rastafarians.
Therefore Panama has an interesting
variety of faiths quite unique in
Latin America.

Pope Francis:

Pope Francis is the head of the
Catholic Church and sovereign
of the Vatican City State.
Francis is the first Jesuit pope,
the first from the Americas, the
first from the Southern Hemisphere.

At his first audience on 16 March
2013, Francis told journalists that
he had chosen the name in honor
of Saint Francis of Assisi, and had
done so because he was especially
concerned for the well-being of
the poor.

Pope Francis said that the most
powerful message of Jesus Christ
is mercy.

Practical teachings:

Francis told La Civilta Cattolica
that the church does not need
to speak constantly of the issues
of abortion, artificial contraception,
and homosexuality. He thought
that other issues, notably the
duty to help those who
are poor and marginalized,
have been neglected. He
added that the church had
focused in trivial issues, and
as such should not be so
prone to condemn, and that
priests should be more welcoming.
He said the confessional should be used
to motivate people to better themselves.

While he has said that the greatest
poverty is "the lack of Christ," and
the "only one real kind of poverty"
is "not living as children of God and
brothers and sisters in Christ", Francis
has also been very outspoken against
material poverty.

Pope Francis has courageously
confronted many difficult issues
in his life, such as the abuses,
corruption and disappeared
students in Argentina, sexual
scandals in the church etc.
He also has a great admiration
for the family as a manifestation
of God in its fullness.

So in summary, Pope Francis
has all the hallmarks of a
revolutionary, he has seen
the light of God!
